How to Play the Imposter Game

The imposter game is a social-deduction word game for 3–15 players on a single phone. Everyone shares the same secret word — except one hidden imposter, who has to fake it. Here's everything you need to run a game, from setup to scoring to the house rules that keep it interesting.

What you need

One phone, three or more people, and about thirty seconds. There's nothing to download and no account to create — open the game in any browser and you're ready. The app handles the secret words, the hints, the timer and the scoreboard, so no one has to sit out as a host.

The goal

Every player except one is part of "the crew" and can see the round's secret word. The remaining player is the imposter, who never sees the word — only a vague hint, or in hard mode, just the category. The crew is trying to figure out who the imposter is. The imposter is trying to blend in well enough to avoid the vote — and, if caught, to guess the secret word from what everyone said.

Setup

  1. Add your players. Enter 3 to 15 names. The game works with as few as three, but really comes alive from about five up.
  2. Choose the number of imposters. One is standard. With eight or more players, add a second imposter to keep the deduction hard.
  3. Pick your categories. Choose from 16 word packs — or browse the full imposter game word list first — or add your own custom words.
  4. Set the round timer (optional) and decide whether the imposter gets a hint or plays in hard mode.

Playing a round, step by step

1. Deal the cards

Pass the phone from player to player. Each person holds their card to secretly reveal it — the crew all see the same secret word, and the imposter sees only a hint (or nothing at all). No one says their word out loud.

2. Give one clue each

Starting with the player the app names, go around the group. On your turn you say exactly one word that relates to the secret word. Too obvious and you hand the imposter an easy tell to copy; too vague and the group starts to suspect you.

3. Discuss and accuse

Once everyone has given a clue, the table opens up. Argue, defend your clue, point fingers, and read the room. The imposter is bluffing the whole time; the crew is trying to catch a clue that doesn't quite fit.

4. Vote

The group votes on who they think the imposter is. If the accused player is the imposter, the crew wins the round — unless the imposter can still guess the secret word.

5. Score

Points are awarded and added to the leaderboard, then you deal the next round. Because scores carry across the night, you can play as many rounds as you like and settle who the best liar really is.

How the imposter wins

The imposter has two paths to victory:

That second rule is what makes the imposter's clues so tense: they need to say something vague enough to avoid suspicion but sharp enough to help them reverse-engineer the word later.

Scoring

The crew scores when they correctly vote out the imposter. The imposter scores — usually bigger — for surviving the vote or for guessing the word after being caught. The exact points are tracked automatically on the in-game leaderboard, which resets whenever you want to start a fresh night.
