Imposter Words for Kids

52 words a seven-year-old will recognise instantly — and none of them appear in the main deck, so this list stays fresh even if your family has played the standard game to death.
The imposter game works with kids, but the default deck doesn't. Half of it assumes you know who a given celebrity is or what a particular meme was. Swap in words from a child's own world and the game clicks: they know the answer cold, which is exactly what makes bluffing fun to watch.
Playing with younger kids
Four adjustments make the difference between chaos and a game everyone finishes:
- Leave the imposter hint on. Hard mode gives the imposter only the category, which is brutal for a child. The hint gives them something to hold on to.
- Shorten the timer to one minute. Long discussion rounds lose younger players. A short round keeps the energy up and gets you to the vote while everyone still cares.
- One imposter, always. Two imposters means tracking two liars at once. Save that for the grown-ups.
- Let clues be two words. The one-word rule is the hardest part for kids. Relaxing it costs the game very little and removes most of the frustration.
If a child ends up as the imposter and freezes, that's normal and it's worth saying out loud before you start: guessing the secret word still wins the round even after being caught. It turns a scary seat into a puzzle.
Are these words too easy?
For adults, yes — deliberately. A good imposter word is one every player recognises without hesitation, because the tension comes from choosing a clue, not from knowing the answer. With kids the recognition bar is lower, so the words are simpler while the actual game stays identical.
